JUSTICE-IMPACTED COUNSELING IN MARYLAND + VIRGINIA
You are more than what happened, what you did, or what the system says about you.
I work with people who are currently or previously involved with the criminal legal system, as well as the loved ones and family members affected by that involvement. That can include coming home, adjusting after incarceration, dealing with probation or parole, rebuilding relationships, navigating changes in family roles, and trying to build something in a world where the system may still have a hand in your life.

WHEN THE SYSTEM DOESN'T STAY IN THE PAST
Coming home doesn't always mean feeling free.
You're trying to rebuild relationships that changed while you were gone
1.
You feel watched, and like one wrong move could take everything back
2.
You're carrying anger or grief or shame, or you've gone numb, and you don't know where to put any of it
3.
People expect you to move on, and your body is still braced
4.
You're trying to work out who you are when you're not in survival mode
5.
Work, housing, family, probation, court, money — the pressure doesn't let up long enough for you to think
6.
You're tired of explaining yourself to people who already decided what your story means
7.
You should not have to prove your humanity before you can ask for help.

Therapy should be somewhere you can put the armor down.

A lot of people come to me having learned to stay alert. To stay guarded, to keep it controlled, to shut it down before it shows. And those responses were not weaknesses. They were useful, and in a lot of cases they were necessary, and they got you here.

But the thing about armor is that it doesn't come off by itself, and it gets heavy in rooms where you don't need it anymore.

I'm not here to decide whether you handled everything perfectly. I'm interested in what happened to you, and in what you had to become to survive it, and in what you want your life to look like from here.

Most of the time you already know more about your own life than anyone gives you credit for. My job is to hold the mirror up long enough for you to see it.
JUSTICE-IMPACTED COUNSELING
Therapy that understands context matters.
This is individual counseling for people whose lives have been shaped by incarceration, court involvement, probation or parole, reentry, or other contact with the criminal legal system.

Here's what it isn't:

-
Not legal representation. I'm not your lawyer and I can't advise you on your case.
-
Not substance use treatment. That's specialized care I don't provide.
-
Not an interrogation. You do not have to walk me through the details of what happened.

The focus here is you and your life. Not your record, and not the version of you that exists in a file somewhere.

WHAT WE CAN WORK ON
Areas We Support

Reentry and adjustment
Learning to live in a world that kept moving while you were away.

Relationships and family
Rebuilding trust, handling conflict, parenting, boundaries, and reconnecting after time apart.

Anxiety and hypervigilance
When your nervous system stays on alert long after the danger it was built for.

Anger, grief, and emotional regulation
Making room for what happened without letting it run everything that happens next.

Identity and self-worth
Pulling apart who you are from the labels, the mistakes, and what everybody else assumed.

Life direction and rebuilding
Working out what you want now, and what it takes to build a life that actually feels like yours.

Sometimes the hardest part is everything around it.
The sentence ends and the rest of it keeps going. Work you can't get. Housing that falls through. Money that never quite covers it. A parole officer to answer to, and children to reintroduce yourself to, and people who stopped calling. The way strangers look at you once they know. And the strange difficulty of making your own decisions again after years of somebody else making them for you.

Some days the pull back toward old places and old patterns is less about wanting it and more about it being the only thing that's familiar.

I can't take those pressures off you. What we can work on is how you carry them, how you respond to them, and how you stay connected to yourself in the middle of them.

I work especially closely with Black men and women, and I don't expect you to separate your mental health from the systems, the culture, the family, and the lived experience that shaped it. You can bring all of it in here.

UPCOMING SUPPORT GROUP
Healing is an Art®: Sacred Space for System-Impacted Families
When someone you love is incarcerated, you carry something that most people around you never see. There's no funeral and no casserole. People ask about it for a little while, and then they stop, and you learn not to bring it up.

This group is for you: partners, spouses, parents, siblings, and anyone whose life has been shaped by a loved one's incarceration.
What this space holds:

-
Ambiguous and disenfranchised grief. The loss the world doesn't always see, and doesn't always let you name.
-
Anger, ambivalence, and love, all at once. You can hold every one of those at the same time here without anyone asking you to pick.
-
Gentle creative expression. A way toward what words can't quite reach, and you don't have to be an artist for it.
-
Community. People who already understand what you're carrying, so you can stop explaining.
